3. Installation and setup
THIS chapter describes how to install the ANT Internet Suite software on your computer, and how to configure the software ready for use.
3.1 Installing the ANT Internet Suite
The ANT Internet Suite Release II is supplied on CD.
Each copy has a unique serial number which may be found on the CD label.
- Make a careful note of your serial number: you will need it to install the software and also to download and install upgrades to
the Suite.
Follow this procedure to install the ANT Internet Suite on your computer and to register your copy of the software:
- Insert the Disc into the CD drive of the computer and click on the CD
icon.
- Double-click Select on the !Install application to start it. The Installer start-up dialogue will appear:
Click the Help button to display interactive help.
- Enter your real name as you wish it to be used by the software. This is the name in which the software will be registered.
- Enter the software serial number - it is IMPORTANT that you use the correct upper and lower case letters as well as any punctuation characters or digits.
-
If you have not made a note of your serial number, you can remove the floppy from the disc drive and replace it once you have entered your serial number.
- Tick either or both of the Modem phone line or Network card options as appropriate to indicate the way in which you will connect to the Internet.
- If you are using Acorn Access you must tick the Network card option, even if you are going to connect to the Internet by modem/phone line. This enables the Internet Suite to load updated drivers and allow Acorn Access to work alongside the Internet Suite.
- Click Select on the Continue button.
If there is any problem with the serial number entered an error message will occur at this stage.
The next step is to configure the ANT Internet Suite to your requirements.
3.2 Entering your service provider details
You next must enter the details of the service provider and the Point of Presence where you connect to the Internet:
- Click on the menu icon and choose the country in which your service provider is based.
- Click the menu icon to display the list of service providers in that country and choose your service provider.
- Display the list of points of presence and choose the one you wish to dial.
- Enter your username.
-
In the case of Demon-style providers where you have both a domain name and account names, you should enter the `node' part of the name here, that is the part which goes between @ and .demon.co.uk in your email address.
- Enter your password.
-
You may leave this field blank, in which case you will be prompted for your password each time you dial.
- Choose the correct setting for Tone dialling: turn this option off if your exchange requires pulse
dialling.
- Click in the Dial 9 box if you need to use a dial prefix.
-
If you need to prefix dialling with something other than 9 you may enter this using the Modem setup section of the Configuration utility in the applications panel after installation.
- Click Continue to go on to the next part of installation.
3.3 Setting up network files
If you selected Network card as a means of connection, the following dialogue box will be displayed:
- Follow the instructions given for setting up !Internet to work with the Internet Suite.
3.4 Installing program files
The main installer window will appear:
To install program files:
1. Drag the blue Internet Suite folder from the Installer window to wherever on your hard disc you wish the software to be stored. Most often this will be the root directory of the hard disc.
- You can also type in a destination path.
2. Select Continue when you are satisfied that the correct destination is shown.
Copying will now take place automatically. As files are copied, you will see a series of icons appear in the middle of the Installer window and information messages will appear in the window.
3. You will be prompted to change disc when necessary. Place the next disc in the drive and click Continue.
4. When a message appears confirming that installation is complete, select Continue to go on to the next step:
- Note that it is normal for one icon to be grey (as shown above) when installing the Suite on single machines: this indicates network components which are not needed or installed.
3.5 Completing installation
You have now completed the installation of the main program files. They have been placed in the directory you specified at the start of the installation:
Depending on the configuration of your computer, you may need to set up some additional files. Several utilities are included in the InstallMe directory, including a virus protection utility. If you plan to exchange files with other Internet users it is recommended that you use some form of virus protection on files you send and receive.
3.6 Notes on Internet Suite installation
The Internet Suite is now installed and ready for use. You should, however, check the following:
- It is important to begin by adjusting your Boot sequence to ensure that no other Internet software is loaded before the ANT Internet Suite. You can either:
- Hold down SHIFT whilst resetting the computer
- Edit the !Boot file/directory to exclude relevant software.
- It is also worth noting that some Ethernet card ROMs can contain software which may disagree with the Internet Suite. If so, you may need to use *Unplug to disable the modules loaded from such cards.
Consult your network manager if you need help.
- By now you should have reset the computer. If you have not already done so, do so now.
- If at any time you need to check or change the settings you entered on installation, you can double-click on the Configuration application in the Internet panel.
Using the Internet Suite with Acorn Access
If your computer is part of a network which uses Acorn Access or Acorn Access+, you will need to ensure that the underlying networking software is correctly set up so that both the Internet Suite and Acorn Access can work at the same time.
