You will need about 10 minutes to perform the actual upgrade
to Select on a Risc PC. On an A7000 / A7000+ / Mico / RiscStation
it can take up to an hour to perform a full upgrade.

* RISC OS 402
  This is the complete hard disc contents for a RISC OS 4.02
  machine. It includes the final Patch 5 update already
  installed.

* Select 2i3
  This is the main part of this first Select CD release.
  There are two sections.
  The RISC OS Select Installer - !InsSelect, for upgrading from
  RISC OS 4.0x or 4.2x to the RISC OS Select 4.33 Disc Image.
  If you have already installed a RISC OS Select Disc Image and
  ROM images, you will also need to use the Installer to upgrade
  the Boot structure to the latest version.
  In future releases individual ROMimages and Boot Components
  will generally only need to be installed using the standard
  !Boot install tool. Please read the individual release notes
  that come with each package as to how they should be installed.
  The second section is the Hard Disc components which are not
  installed by the !InsSelect application.

* StrongED
  Details of addition that can be made to StrongED to support
  the moving of the PinBoard to the front or rear of the screen
  using the CTRL-Page Up and CTRL-Page Down key combinations. 

This CD has been produced using Joliet extensions.
If you are using Warm Silence CDROMFS or already have a version
of RISC OS Select installed then you will be able to view the
directories in upper and lowercase and with the full length
filenames.


2. Release Notes
================

2.1 Installation
----------------

All the archives on this CD are zip archives which require
you to either have a copy of SparkFS or Spark or Sparkplug.

A self extracting version of Sparkplug is included in the
Resources directory if you have none of the above.

There are three possible Installation routines.

1. To install RISC OS Select onto a clean Hard Drive
2. To upgrade from RISC OS 4.0x/4.2x to 4.33
3. To upgrade from an existing Select Installation to 4.33

N.B. RISC OS 4.33 (6.24) refers to the Kernel Version number only.
The Boot Sequence and other Applications will change at different
rates. i.e There may be changes to the Boot sequence to cope with
new features that do not demand a new Kernel number.
Look at the !Boot.PartNumber file to determine which Boot
sequence you have installed. Please make sure that you always
have the latest Boot installed.

Usage of RISC OS Select requires that you already have a set
of RISC OS 4 ROMs in your computer. If you do not have RISC OS 4
then you will need to purchase a set of ROMs before you can use
RISC OS Select. 

It is advisable to printout the following section if you have
any concerns over the installation of RISC OS Select.

2.1.1 Installing RISC OS Select onto a clean Hard Drive.
--------------------------------------------------------

If you want to install a nice new big drive into your computer
then the recommended procedure is as follows:-

a.  Remove the CD ROM drive from your computer and install
    the new hard drive in its place. Make sure the new hard drive
    is configured as the slave drive using the links on the back
    of the drive.

b.  Format the new drive :5 with !HForm.

c.  Copy the contents of your original hard drive onto the new
    drive.

d. Shut down the computer.

e. Remove the old drive from the computer and replace it with
   the new drive (after changing its links so that it is now the
   Master Drive.)

Now proceed with the Installation instructions for
section 2.1.2 or 2.1.3 as appropriate.

Alternatively you can take your machine to a RISC OS Dealer
or an Authorised Installer who will be happy to perform
the job for you at their usual rates.

2.1.2 Upgrading from RISC OS 4.0x for the first time.
--------------------------------------------------------------

This should be straightforward if you have a standard machine
configuration. i.e 1 x ADFS hard drive and 1 x CDROM drive.

In order to accomodate an easy return to running RISC OS 4.0x
the contents of your existing !Boot directory are moved inside
the new Select !Boot structure and will appear in the OldBoot
directory. If you still have any InactivRes directories leftover
from previous RISC OS 4 installations then you can probably now
safely delete them.

The Installer will only install the new !Boot structure.

The other hard disc based components such as !ChangeFSI etc
will have to be manually installed from the HardDisc1i9/zip
archive. The final location of these applications on your hard
drive is not important, but we suggest you install them into the
same directories as they are in the archive file.
Remember that unlike Windows you can happily move applications
around on your hard drive without limitation!

   a. First take a copy of your existing !Boot sequence either
      onto CD or onto a backup directory on your hard drive.
      If anything fails during installation you will then have a
      backup copy. The Installer does NOT delete your old !Boot
      directory, but simply moves it inside the new !Boot into
      the OldBoot directory.

   b. Run !InsSelect

   c. You will be asked to ensure that you have quit all
      applications. You should either quit all the applications
      and press Continue, or select the 'Quit tasks' option for
      applications to be quit automatically.
      If any application had unsaved data it will ask you to
      save that data before being quit. The installer will
      identify this and warn you of this fact. You should save
      the data and re-run the Installer.

   d. Read the licence presented to you. When you have read and
      agreed to the terms, press the Accept button. If you do
      not agree to the terms you should remove any parts of the
      software you have already copied and return the CD and
      packaging to your supplier.

   e. The installer will pause for a moment to check that the
      archives it is about to install have not become corrupt or
      been tampered with, and then ask where to install Select.
      This will default to any previous installation which has
      been seen. You may drag the Boot icon to a location to
      install the Select boot sequence, or drag a previous
      installation to the window to use it. Once the
      location has been set, press 'Continue'

   f. The various phases of the installation will be performed.
      Where no previous boot sequence is being updated this will
      be just a copy of the new boot sequence. For an update,
      this will involve merging parts of your old boot sequence.
      You should confirm each stage of this update.

   g. When complete, the installer will ask for a ROM image to
      use. You should drag a ROM image or ROM image archive to
      the window to install it as the initial ROM to use. If you
      do not wish to install a ROM, you may just press Skip and
      the installation will default to 'No softload'.

   h. The installation is complete. Press 'Exit', shutdown and
      reboot the machine.

   i. Once the machine has booted into Select, the Task Manager
      icon will have changed to a green 'cog', rather than the
      more familiar '4 Cube'.
      If the icon is still the '4 Cube' you are using the 'No
      softload' variant of Select. This has reduced
      functionality. Use the configuration tool to select a
      Softload image. Select has a significantly different
      configuration application suite.
      You should look through it confirming the options you wish
      to use.
      Use the Help tool for more information on the options it
      provides.

2.1.3 Upgrading from an existing RISC OS Select Installation.
-------------------------------------------------------------

This is potentially the trickiest option if you try to
perform the upgrade manually. We thus recommend that you
only use the Installer.

   a. First take a copy of your existing !Boot sequence either
      onto CD or onto a backup directory on your hard drive.

   b. Run !InsSelect

   c. You will be asked to ensure that you have quit all
      applications. You should either quit all the applications
      and press Continue, or select the 'Quit tasks' option for
      applications to be quit automatically.
      If any application had unsaved data it will ask you to
      save that data before being quit. The installer will
      identify this and warn you of this fact. You should save
      the data and re-run the Installer.

   d. Read the licence presented to you. When you have read and
      agreed to the terms, press the Accept button. If you do
      not agree to the terms you should remove any parts of the
      software you have already copied and return the CD and
      packaging to your supplier.

   e. The installer will pause for a moment to check that the

2.2 RISC OS 4.02 <-> Select switching via the Softloader
--------------------------------------------------------

The new softloader mechanism within RISC OS Select allows
for three different setups to be used on a machine.

1. No softload
   .. uses the new RISC OS Select Boot sequence
   but with the RISC OS 4.02/4.03 ROM image.
   Some of the configuration plugin options are not
   available in this mode.

2. Original boot sequence
   Reverts the machine to using the original ROM image and the
   original Boot sequence.

3. New RISC OS Select ROMimage and Boot sequence.

Please note that due to differences in CMOS settings between
different ROM kernel versions it is advisable to perform a
Delete Power on when first installing a new ROM image.

If reverting from a RISC OS Select Boot and ROMimage to
a 4.02 version then it is advisable to Power down between
Reboots.

2.3 Unplugged modules
---------------------

If you are running a machine which requires Modules to be
unplugged then you should make a note of any modules which are
unplugged using the command *unplug before upgrading to Select,
or before installing new ROMimages. After upgrading to RISC OS
Select for the first time, or after installing a new ROM image
you should check to ensure that the correct modules are still
unplugged.
This is because of differing numbers of modules and their
position in a RISC OS kernel leading to the incorrect module
becoming unplugged when a new ROM is installed. Generally you
can use the command *RMReinit <module> to restore it. Some
modules can however only be restored by performing a Delete
power on.

2.4 32 bit Shared C Library
---------------------------

This version of RISC OS Select now allows the softloading of
alternative 32 bit compatible Shared C Libraries.
It is the intention that future versions of Select will include
the appropriate Shared C Library as part of the Select ROM image.

2.5 Viewfinder graphics cards
-----------------------------

If you are using a Viewfinder graphics card then you should
ensure that your RISC OS monitor type is explicitly configured.
i.e this will usually be *Configure MonitorType 3
If the Monitortype is configured to Auto then the Viewfinder
will not display anything until the desktop stage is reached.

However please note the Bug report in Section 6.7 


3. Preview components
=====================

3.1 !Printers+
--------------

This is a work in progress version of the new network enabled
!Printers. !Printers+ saves its choices into
<Choices$Write>.Printers2 so that it is possible to have both
!Printers and !Printers+ installed at the same time with
different sets of PDFs installed in each version.
The 2 versions cannot be run at the same time though.

Printers+ adds the following features.

 * Paper feeds and output bins can now be configured for 'dp'
   and 'lj' printers, as well as for Postscript ones.

 * The Printer connection window has been much enhanced with
   new connection methods; if the relevant filing systems are
   installed then !Printers+ will allow connection via LanManFS,
   LanMan98, LPR, JetDirect or USB.

 * A new format of PDF has been created that allows both
   standard PDF information and resources (palette files, paper
   feeds, output bins, paper sizes etc) to be bundled together.
   The user can then install these new PDFs just by dropping one
   file in. A tool, !PrtBundle, has been built to allow simple
   creation/extraction of these bundled PDFs.

 * When using shared printers across Access networks resources
   for shared printers (such as palette files etc) no longer
   need to be installed locally on every machine.

 * !Printers+ can now be run with a -quit flag on the command
   line. This starts !Printers+, loads the modules required and
   configures the default printer, then exits. By running
   !Printers+ in this way at startup applications can instantly
   print without needing to load !Printers+ manually. This also
   uses the minimum amount of memory.

 * LJ based printing now copes better with non-A4 paper sizes.

Features planned for future releases are hoped to include.

 * Improved Postscript driver.
 
 * Enhanced Colour balancing/dithering algorithms.

 * A configure plug in for selecting printers from a list
   (printer manufacturer, printer model, PDF originator) with
   facilities for easily adding new printer definitions off disc.

 * Different "Profiles" for different users/setups etc.

A release of the Source to !Printers+ frontend is due to be 
made on the SourceForge Web Site shortly.


3.2 Omniclient with Appletalk support
-------------------------------------

This is the standard !Omniclient 2 release which has been
updated to include the Appletalk client.
Configuration of Omniclient is performed by the Omniclient
configuration plugin inside the Internet section of the
!Boot plugin tools.

3.3 Bugz 1.15
-------------

Bugz is a tool for reporting faults. It can be used to report
faults in RISC OS Select, or developers may use it to provide
feedback for their own applications from users.


4. Changes with RISC OS Select 2
================================


Introduction
------------
Within this document, various references are made to other documentation
supplied within the 'Docs' directory. The documentation supplied is a mix
of programmers documentation and release notes. Much of the programmers
documentation is in the process of conversion for the main site and will be
provided in due course.

In addition, a 'Details' directory is provided containing details of the
changes which occurred at each component version change. These details are
necessarily complex and only likely to be of use to developers.


Graphics
--------
Much of the focus of the Select 2 development has been focused around the
enhancement of the graphical facilities of the operating system. The
associated document 'GraphicsSystem' provides a more general overview of the
graphics system and some of the changes that have been made.

Particular changes of note are :

  * CMYK sprites are now supported
    CMYK sprites can be created, manipulated and plotted. The current
    implementation is functional, however certain applications which
    manipulate sprites directly may be provoke undefined results.
    Refer to 'SpriteExtend-CMYK'.

  * Sprite, JPEG and DrawFile rendering may use 'colour mapping'
    Colour mapping allows arbitrary functions to manipulate the colours
    as used within the graphics.
    Refer to 'ColourMap-DrawFile' and 'ColourMap-Sprite'.
  
  * JPEGs rendering system has been improved
    The number of variants of JPEG that are handled has been improved,
    including the rendering of progressive JPEGs.
    Refer to 'GraphicsSystem', 'CompressJPEG', and 'SpriteExtend-Errors'.

  * Sprites may be rendered translucently
    Sprite operations which would previously generate a solid image may
    now be rendered at arbitrary degrees of translucency. This new
    facility is used by the DragASprite module to provide translucent
    dragging of objects within the desktop.
    Refer to 'SpriteExtend-Translucency'.
  
  * Sprite generation from PNGs
    Sprites may be generated from PNG imaged using the new ConvertPNG
    module.
    Refer to 'ConvertPNG'.
  
  * Generic image file rendering
    Image files may be rendered through a plugin interface provided by
    the new 'ImageFileRender' module.
    Refer to 'ImageFileRender'.
  
  * System sprite pool changed
    The system sprite pool is no longer maintained by the Kernel. All
    manipulation of the system sprite pool is now delegated to the
    SpriteUtils module.
    Refer to 'SystemSpriteArea'.
  
  * Generic blending tables can now be generated
    The new BlendTable module has been created to generate tables for
    blending between different colours in shallow colour modes.
    Refer to 'BlendTable' and 'InverseTable' for more details.


Input
-----
In order to support the 'Wheel' mice which are now prevalent, parts of the
system have been modified to provide a new interface for accessing such
devices. The kernel issues additional requests to pointer devices to
discover the state of such devices. Support for PS2 and quadrature wheel
mice is now provided.

A PS2 wheel mouse can be used via the standard RiscPC quadrature interface
by using an STD PS2 mouse interface. The STD mouse interface must be
configured to 'driver' mode (consult documentation supplied with the PS2
interface) and the relevant mouse type selected in the mouse configuration.
Alternatively, use *Configure MouseType 10 to select the STD PS2 mouse
interface driver.

Within the desktop, new flag bits and icon validations have been defined
to allow applications aware of the new interface to take advantage
of the new input method. Toolbox 'Slider' gadgets and ColourPicker
'Slider' gadgets have been enhanced to support the new interface.

Refer to 'PointerDevices' for low level driver information and
'WindowScroll' for the desktop interface.


Window manager
--------------
In keeping with the core graphical changes, the WindowManager has
been enhanced to ensure that these graphical changes are used where
applicable.

  * Disabled icons algorithm improved
    The colours to which icons now fade when disabled are now slightly
    different to those previously used. Disabled icons will now fade
    toward the background colour of the window, rather than toward
    white. 

  * Deep shaded sprites
    Sprites in icons with 32 thousand or 16 million colours will now
    fade correctly in the same manner as their shallow colour
    counterparts.

  * Furniture tool order configuration
    The window furniture tools can be configured to use different
    a different order to that which RISC OS has previously used.
    A simple configuration tool is provided within the Window configuration
    group.

  * New interface for sizing text
    Text sizing of italic fonts has been improved to allow for the
    printable area to be determined for desktop fonts. Previously,
    italic fonts might be truncated by sizing routines using
    the standard operations.
    Refer to 'WimpTextOp'


Networking
----------
Networking operations have been improved where they have been found to
be lacking. The changes are necessarily not as large as those which took
place for Select 1, but are still important.

  * Automatic configuration of network interfaces
    Network operations have been improved to allow the automatic
    configuration of network interfaces. A new configuration command and a
    related option in the interface configuration tool have been added.
    The InetConfigure module takes on the job of performing this automatic
    configuration, and has necessitated the removal of the old FWAutoAddress
    configuration command.
    Refer to 'AutomaticConfiguration'.

  * A(corn) Universal Network support
    In order to support certain applications which require support for 'AUN'
    networking, the NetI and related components have been updated to support
    the facilities offered by Select. 'AUN' refers to the support for
    Econet operations over Ethernet. New configuration tools have been
    developed and can be found within the 'Network' configuration group.
    In keeping with the automatic configuration changes, network maps
    used by AUN systems can be automatically configured from the network
    address.
    Refer to 'AUNIntro'.

  * Internet pollwords
    A new 'ioctl' operation has been added to allow applications to flag
    changes on a socket when operations occur. This alleviates the
    requirement for additional shared code just to notify multitasking
    applications of activity on sockets.
    Refer to 'Pollword'.
  
  * Fix for ShareFS authenticated objects
    Authenticated shares were issued incorrectly in Select 1. This fix
    allows objects to be shared using authentication.


Kernel
------
The Kernel has been changed to support a number of the changes described
elsewhere in this document, in particular for handling of CMYK sprites
and mouse wheel. In addition, parts of the kernel have been reworked in
anticipation of future developments.

  * RiscStation support
    The hardware used within the RiscStation machines is now supported
    by the kernel and such machines will now function with the same
    ROM image as other machines.
  
  * Addition of function signatures
    Certain parts of the kernel have been updated to use function
    signatures. This is an on going process which should allow for
    simpler debugging. It should be noted that many of the modules
    within Select are now built with function name embedding enabled
    such that developers can identify problem locations.
  
  * Rationalised module operations
    Certain calls (Unplugging and Inserting modules) were only possible
    through CLI commands under previous versions of the OS. Select makes
    these available as SWI calls to simplify their interface.
    A new operation has been added to allow the enumeration of modules
    with their private words pointers - an operation which was previously
    impossible.
    A module service has been added to allow clients to be aware of the
    state of modules.

  * Fix for 1bpp sprite mask operations
    Certain operations on 1bpp masks would fail.

  * Removal of OS_SubstituteArgs
    This call now lives in the OSSWIs module.
  
  * Dynamic area delegation
    Font and System Sprite dynamic areas have now been delegated to the
    FontManager and SpriteUtils modules respectively.


Desktop
-------
The Desktop components have been improved slightly to allow for issues
raised in Select 1.
 
  * Filer text strings are now sized more reliably
    Text in filenames on icons is now sized correctly using the new
    Wimp_TextOp calls (see above).
  
  * Random requests for unshared discs fixed.
    Previously an interaction between special fields on discs with
    filers open and shared discs would cause directory viewers opened
    on to directories which had become unshared to request the unshared
    discs. This has been corrected.

  * Reduced memory usage for selection of large numbers of files
    Previously, attempting to drag a large number of files would use
    a large amount of memory. This has been reduced substantially.
  
  * Moving files on ImageNFS no longer faults directories
    When moving directories on ImageNFS, an error about directories
    containing objects is no longer generated.

  * Pinboard can use Drawfiles as background images
    Strictly Pinboard can use any file format supported by the
    ImageFileRender module. At present, this means DrawFile or
    JPEG in addition to Sprites.
    

Toolbox
-------
The toolbox components have been updated to support some of the wheel
mouse additions, and to address some issues raised by Select 1.

  * Scrolling lists are now faded in a better manner
    Although the algorithm is not identical to that used by the
    WindowManager, it more closely matches it than previously.
  
  * Scrolling lists can now use column headings
    It is possible to use the column lists together with headings to
    allow lists of related elements to be grouped together.
    Documentation to follow.
  
  * Improved resizing on scrolling list transitions
    The extent of the scrolling list windows was not always being
    correctly calculated as changes were made between different
    display formats.

  * Scrolling list help is now provided
    Previously, help messages were not provided where they had been
    provided by the client. They will now be provided.

  * Scrool wheel support for sliders
    Slider gadgets can be modified by using the scroll wheel, if supported
    by the mouse driver.


Configuration tools
-------------------
The configuration tools have been updated to address a few issues raised in
Select 1 and to provide the configuration of the extra facilities which
Select 2 offers. In some cases, components have moved in the structure, but
only to the extent that they now live within sub-groups. The configuration
groups can now provide a 'full info' mode for displaying more information
about the tools.

  * Access configuration renamed ShareFS
    The name 'Access' was confusing to some users and so the component
    has been renamed to ShareFS.
  
  * AUN configuration tools provided
    To configure the AUN networking components provided within Select 2,
    two new tools are provided - AUN and NetFS.
    Refer to 'AUNIntro'.
  
  * Boot configuration tools improved.
    Configuration tools can now change display format (large and small
    icons), be resized and can open directories.
  
  * New input configuration group
    The 'Input' group allows configuration of input devices. The mouse
    and keyboard tools have been moved here and a mouse scroll 
    configuration tool has been added to this group.

  * Automatic interface configuration
    In interface configuration tool, the old AUN auto-configuration
    option has been extended to cover the new auto-configuration
    options.

  * Pinboard configuration tool reflects changes in Pinboard
    The tool has been updated to support the ImageFileRender component,
    allowing it to render any image that Pinboard can use.
  
  * New time and date configuration tool
    The Date and Time tool can configure the date manually, or configure
    network time fetches on startup. This function replaces the 'Set
    clock...' option which would normally be accessed through Alarm.

  * Users configuration now allows auto-logon
    The 'default user' can now be selected, allowing automatic log on
    with as a user without supplying a password.

  * New windows configuration group
    The old Window tool can now be found within the Window configuration
    group. This should allow for greater flexibility in the future. A
    rudimentary configuration tool is provided to cater for configuration
    of the furniture order.

  * Sound frequency configuration tool
    A rudimentary tool for configuring the loading of RateTracker is
    provided.
    Refer to 'RateTracker'.


Applications
------------
The applications supplied with Select have not changed significantly with
the exception of Paint and, to a much lesser extent, Draw. Draw can now
use ctrl-D to 'duplicate' the current selection in a similar manner to the
prior, non-clipboard, ctrl-C operation. In addition, ctrl-V now pastes
the clipboard at the pointer, fixing a rather annoying fault in the
previous version.

Paint has had what can only be described as a major overhaul. In line with
some of the graphics changes described above, Paint has been extended to
use CMYK sprites and has improved PNG import capabilities. Many other changes
are documented in the related documentation.
Note: Because of the significant number of changes which require the
      enhanced graphics system provided by Select 2, Paint will not function
      on earlier versions of the OS. You should make a backup of the
      previous version if you intend to use it with earlier OS versions.
Refer to 'Paint'.

ResEd has had a few updates to cater for the additional options provided by
the window system.


Library
-------
The library has not changed significantly for Select 2. A new JPEG
transcoding tool, 'MiniJTran' has been created to use the features  provided
by the transcoding CompressJPEG module. This allows JPEG files to be
converted to and from progressive images.


Updated modules
---------------
The modules provided within !System have been updated to include the common
ethernet drivers. This should alleviate some of the issues involved in
upgrading. VProtect has been updated to the latest version, and a version
of RateTracker has been provided.
Refer to 'RateTracker'.


Miscellaneous boot updates
--------------------------
The Boot sequence components have been updated to support the use of AUN
components within the Internet resources. The Boot sequence should not
be able to be run from remote machines or where it has not been used to
boot this machine.


5. Use of RISC OS Select with RiscStation and Mico computers
============================================================

This version of RISC OS Select should work correctly with 
both RiscStation and MicroDigital Mico computers without
modification. However we have not been able to test this
version with the MicroDigital Mico as our test machine
has not been returned by MicroDigital after it was sent for
upgrading in July.


6. Known issues with Select 2 Issue 3 
=====================================

6.1 CDFS
--------

The very varying standards to which different CD manufacturers
adhere, are making it very hard to support every different
CD ROM drive which is officially classed as an ATAPI CD ROM
drive.

Older versions of CDFS supported drives then currently available
but did not offer the newer features which we have incorporated
into RISC OS Select.

We cannot unfortunately guarantee that the new drivers will
work with all types of older drives.

We have successfully tested the version of CDFS built into this
release of Select with a variety of current drives up to 52x,
including a number of DVD-ROM drives.

There is unfortunately a problem with reading multi-session
PhotoCDs which we have been unable to resolve. Single session
PhotoCDs work OK.

If you find problems with the Select CDFS then you can revert to
the old RISC OS 3.7 CDFS by using the !OldCDFS application
which is located in the Resources Directory on this CD.
Once this program is run and the machine rebooted a softload
version of CDFS v2.29 will be loaded which will give access to
types that give problems under the Select CDFS.

If you want to return to using the Select CDFS then you will have
to reconfigure the number of CD-ROM drives in order to
re-activate CDFS.

6.2 DHCP
--------

The DHCP implementation has been tested with Debian Linux based
PC servers, DHCP servers built in to Web Ramp ISDN routers,
Pocket Printer Servers and the University of Birmingham servers
as well as many others.
It does work with the UK NTLWorld Cable Modem service. 
Initial Registration of the Cable Modem usually has to be
done using a PC, but if the DHCP lease is allowed to expire by 
leaving the Cable Modem disconnected for about 8 hours, then 
if a Risc PC is powered up connected to the Cable Modem then
its MAC address will be registered for the DHCP Lease.
If you have multiple machines connected to an NTL Cable
Modem service, then we suggest you either acquire a Cable
Modem Router or else use Internet Connection Sharing.

6.3 PC Cards
------------

We have tested RISC OS Select with !PCPro 3.03 and a 586 card.
It works OK as long as you have sufficient memory installed.

There is a problem with the !PCConfig program failing to
run. We understand that Aleph1 are working on an updated version.

6.3.1 Error Unable to allocate PC RAM occurs
--------------------------------------------

If you have just upgraded to RISC OS Select from RISC OS 4.0x
you will now have 6MB less RAM available, because of the
RAM taken by the Select Softloaded ROM image. If this
message now occurs you will have to either reduce the amount
of RAM used by the PC Card, or else add extra RAM to your
machine.

6.3.2 Error No Boot Device! etc
-------------------------------

If you have an AMD 586 PC card from CJE then you will get the
error 'No boot device' if you have an out of date copy of
PCSleep in your PreDesk directory.
To fix the problem
* Remove any copy/directory called PCSleep from PreDesk.
* Shutdown and then TURN THE POWER OFF ( a reset is not
  sufficient!)
* Restart
* Install latest PC Sleep which is available from
http://www.cjemicros.co.uk/micros/resources/PCCard.zip

6.4 DrawWorks 3rd Millennium
----------------------------

Some DrawWorks programs report an error relating to !Draw.
This is because !Draw is now a hard disc based component
rather than a ROM based application.
Please check the APDL Web Site for updates.


6.5 A7000+ with specific memory combinations
--------------------------------------------

It has been reported that some specific combinations of memory,
fitted to A7000+ will fail to load the Select Softload and will
fail with a green screen. The problem is likely to be due to
the hardware on the A7000+ incorrectly reporting the memory
layout and the softloader then being unable to allocate the
required memory for the ROM image.
We are still investigating this matter as we have been unable
to reproduce the condition on our test machines.

6.6 Kinetic cards with large amounts of motherboard RAM
-------------------------------------------------------

Whilst the normal RISC OS 4 ROM kernel will detect the presence
of large amounts of memory, attempts to load the Select Softload
kernel will fail with a green screen. We are still investigating
this matter.

6.7 ViewFinder installation notes
---------------------------------

Affected components:
  Certain ViewFinder cards in conjunction with Select 2 ROM images.
Note:
  Boot sequence installation is NOT affected by this issue.
  (Select 2 boot sequence may be installed on all systems without
  issue)

Summary
-------
Certain versions of the ViewFinder podule fail to function with 
the ROM image supplied with RISC OS Select 2. The symptoms of such
failure are that after softloading the ROM image the machine will
reboot and display an 'abort' message on the standard video output.
Subsequent reboots (eg Ctrl-Break) will not recover from this.
It is necessary to turn the machine off and on, or press the reset
button to restore ViewFinder to a functioning state.
                                 
Recovery procedure
------------------
If your machine exhibits this fault, the recovery procedure is as
follows :

  1. Turn machine off.
  2. Wait a few seconds to ensure that all hardware has powered
     down.
  3. Turn machine on.
  4. Hold down the 'Z' key until the desktop appears.
     This prevents a softload taking place and will leave the
     system in 'No softload' mode. From here it is possible to use
     the machine as normal, or change softload ROM image.
  5. Run Configure and select the 'Softload' tool.
  6. Select an earlier ROM image.
  7. Click 'Set and reboot'.
                                 
A new version of the ViewFinder firmware (1.49) is now available 
from Windfall Engineering Web Site http://www.windfall.nl/ 
which when used in  conjunction with the Select 2i3 ROM image 
appears to function correctly with both 8 MB and 32 MB ViewFinder.

We advise that you upgrade to this latest version.


6.9 Installation fails with Castle Storm SCSI card installed.
-------------------------------------------------------------
It has been reported that the upgrader fails when upgrading
from RISC OS 4.0x to Select if a Castle Storm SCSI card is fitted.
We have not been able to replicate this, but we advise that 
if the upgrader fails when a Castle Storm SCSI card is installed
that the card be temporarily removed whilst the Select Upgrade
is performed. Once RISC OS Select is running then the SCSI card
can be re-installed.

6.10 Impression
---------------
Impression uses Dynamic areas for handling large files >28MB

With machines now regularly having more than 64MB installed
the calculation that Impression uses to decide if the machine
has enough memory to activate Dynamic Areas gets it wrong
under certain circumstances.

We are not sure what the exact circumstances are but we have
tested on Kinetic machines with 128MB + 4MB + 2MB VRAM
and run !Impression as the first item run at startup
and Dynamic areas are successfully created as shown by the
presence of an entry Publisher Plus data Dynamic Area.

6.11 Failure of certain applications when 64MB SIMMs are fitted
---------------------------------------------------------------
Similar to the above problem it appears that some applications
fail if they are allowed to grab Dynamic Areas greater than 64MB.

A patch has been produced which may help in this situation
which is available from..

8. RISC OS Select End-user Licence Agreement
============================================

The package to which this documentation relates incorporates
software ("Software") in which all the intellectual property
rights or the right to grant licences for the use of the
Software are owned either by Pace Micro Technology plc
("Pace") (or its Licensors) or others. Before installing the
Software please read the End-User Licence Conditions detailed
below. If you do not agree to the terms and conditions of the
End-User Licence please do not proceed to install or use the

End User Licence Conditions for the RISC OS Select upgrades to
the RISC OS 4 Operating system. (This licence is supplemental
to the End User Licence Agreement for RISC OS 4.)


1. Definitions

The following expressions have the meanings given here:

"Authorised Product" means any ARM processor based computer
which contains, and runs, RISC OS 4.00 or greater in ROM.
"Software" means the operating system programs, applications,
utilities and modules comprised within the version of RISC OS
incorporated in the RISC OS Select Scheme and supplied as a
disk image or as a ROM image on tangible media. "Subscriber"
means the subscriber to the RISC OS Select Scheme.

2. Licence Grant, Conditions and Restrictions

(a) RISCOS Ltd grants you a non-exclusive, worldwide (subject
to export controls), non-transferable, royalty free licence
to:

 (i)  install the Software on up to 10 (ten) Authorised
 Product(s) owned and used by the Subscriber at any one
 location.

 (ii) use the Software (once installed as aforesaid) upon
 and with the Authorised Product(s) into which it has been
 installed.

(b) You must ensure that the copyright, trademark and other
protective notices contained in the Software are maintained
and not altered or removed and that all such notices are
reproduced and included in any copy of the Software on each
Authorised Product on which it is installed.

(c) Except as authorised above or expressly permitted by
statute you may not: use the Software in conjunction with any
other computer hardware other than the Authorised Products
into which you install it; incorporate all (or any of) the
Software into other programs developed by (or on behalf of)
you and/or used by you; reverse engineer, decompile or
disassemble the Software; make the Software available, or
permit its redistribution, for use with any other computer
hardware than the Authorised Product into which you install
it; rent, lease, gift, loan, sell, distribute or transfer

3. Termination

This licence is effective until terminated. You may terminate

(a) This End User Licence will be governed by the laws of
England.

(b) The above terms and conditions supersede any prior
agreement, oral or written, between you and RISCOS Ltd
relating to the Software.

(c) The media upon which the Software is incorporated within
the Product is the responsibility of your supplier and RISCOS
Ltd shall have no liability as regards any defects within said
media.
